Sight casting to large schools of Bull Redfish has been a sure bet on the Crystal River.

Usually, this time of year brings upon numerous scattered thunderstorms. This year has been some what of an exception. Showers have been few and far between and have been occurring late at night and early in the morning, which has helped keep water temperatures cool. The cooler water temperatures have definitely helped keep the fishing active.

  The first full moon in September is known for producing the largest Redfish of the year. And sure enough Huge schools of Redfish were roaming everywhere from Homosassa Point all the way to the North Shore of the Crystal River. On back to back days, I had customers land over 20-25 oversized Redfish all within 1-2 hour spurts. Mixed in with these huge Schools of Redfish are a few keepers, but most of the fish were well oversized.

  On one of these days, I had a customer catch 10-12 Redfish all between 30 and 33 inches, off a 10 foot ledge, which rose up to 4 foot. I watched a school of over 100 Redfish chase a school of mullet to the top of the water before I had my customer cast their baits. We were using 5-6 inch pinfish and live blue crabs, but I don't think it would have mattered, mainly because these Redfish hit our baits as soon as they hit the water. With fishing this fast and furious we had many double and triple headers. When using 4 pound Power Pro, these Redfish between 8 and 13 pounds put up one heck of a fight.
