Jim Rivers and Blake Summers are showing off some beautiful redfish and trout we caught while fishing out of the Crystal River.
Thankfully, this has been one of the mildest winters on record for the Crystal River/Homosassa area. With water temperatures still hovering around the mid to lower 60's, many of the fish we are targeting are coming off spots we would normally be fishing during the summer migration. Redfish and Sheepshead are two of the best fighting fish shallow water fishing has to offer. Not to mention with a little salt and pepper, they are also tough to beat on the grill.
We have been targeting these fish on a variety of structure lately. These fish seemed to hold together better in shallow water. Less than five feet of water has been my target depth, but the sheepshead have even been caught in water as deep as 10 feet. I still like to target these fish in shallow water because with the lack or rain the water clarity is unbelievable. Sight cast and stalking these fish is always a blast on my flats skiff and on a few recent trips my customers have all been spoiled with limits of redfish to go along with double digit catches of sheepshead.
Because these sheepshead are heading offshore to spawn we always try to keep our limits well below the state limits. Conservation is the key this time of year. It wouldn't take much to fill up your cooler with these beautiful fish, but I enjoy throwing a few in for supper before snapping a few photos and releasing the others.
If Sheephead and Redfishing are what get your blood boiling, there may be no better area than the Crystal River and Homosassa. If you’re interested in learning more about RED HOT FISHING CHARTERS feel free to call or email us at REDHOTFISHINGCHARTERS.COM
